The beloved and hardworking Congressman Eleandro Jesus “Budoy” F. Madrona, DOST Secretary Dr. Renato U. Solidum, Jr., DOST-MIMAROPA Regional Director Dr. Ma. Josefina P. Abilay along with their DOST Family, Municipal Mayor Esteban “Denon ” SF Madrona, Jr., selected SB members, Barangay Captains of Carmen and Sugod, fisherfolk organizations, LGU personnel, PNP, PIA-Romblon and other involved agencies have proudly attended the Groundbreaking Ceremony of the Ice Plant and Storage Facility.

For the welcome address, Mayor Denon have greeted everyone a pleasant morning. He stated that this project is very beneficial to improve the economic sector of San Agustin. Furthermore, the advantages of having the Ice Plant will be connected to agriculture (livelihood), culture and tourism as well. The location was delicately chosen as to ensure the smooth operation for the near future. It is beside the fish landing and near the fish cages as well as the fish sanctuary of San Agustin. Mayor Denon emphasized that the stated project is for the benefit of the fisherfolk organization to aid in their livelihood and avoid spoilage of their fish/seafood products.

For the inspirational message, both DOST Secretary Dr. Renato U. Solidum, Jr., DOST-MIMAROPA Regional Director Dr. Ma. Josefina P. Abilay have given vital information on this collaborative project. “This is a significant milestone of the fishing industry of San Agustin”, Dr. Abilay stated. She emphasized that the innovation of the preservation process of the products will contribute to the primary producers, suppliers up to the consumers. Dr. Abilay said that together, we will lay the foundation and begin the journey that will not only change the fish industry but the lives of the people.

Moreover, DOST-Secretary Dr. Solidum have explained the essence of Science and Technology and emphasized that in order to improve the Eco-Tourism of San Agustin, the promotion of human well-being must be accomplished. The species of the products, the living environment, harvesting up to the preservation and packaging has to be well-planned and executed. “Sa Siyensya at Teknolohiya, tiyak kayo ay kikita”. DOST offers guidance and help to registered businesses (operating for three years) to improve the status of their livelihood.

Congressman Budoy Madrona graced the ceremony with his presence and intelligence as well. He humbly extended his gratitude to the support of the DOST as to improve the Science and Technology not only in the town of San Agustin, but to the province of Romblon and MIMAROPA-Region. As there were concerns with the spoilage of fish/seafood products which will certainly lead to income loss, this project aims to help fisherfolks and plenty of establishments. The Ice Plant could potentially supply in the nearby town and if the facility widens operation in the future, the supply could go beyond the town of Lucena and Batangas. After the program, Municipal Administrator Johnny S. Jesalva has given the closing remarks with happiness for the milestone of San Agustin. We await the exciting blessing and inauguration of the Ice Plant in the near future.
